It’s taken me a couple days to reflect on what happened on the 28th May 2011 at Wembly.
I, of course, was extremely optimistic Man United could win their 4th Champion’s League. After all, Man United had not conceded a goal away from Old Trafford all season in the champion’s league.
The truth is that Barcelona are just absolutely amazing. They are by far the best football team I have ever seen. They completely outplayed Man United, a team that showed tactical brilliance when it mattered leading up to the final.
Xavi had 141 successful passes out of 148 attempts. That is a new record for attempted passes and successful passes. That is absolutely unbelievable.
Enough has been written and spoken about Lionel Messi. And they are all true... he is in my opinion already the best ever, at 23.
Wayne Rooney, Messi’s opponent on the night, said this about Messi and Barcelona:
"They are the best team I’ve seen and Lionel Messi the best player. I think he got three nutmegs in the first-half. On my PlayStation I can make him do what I want but he’s even better in real life. The speed he moves his legs, in fact his whole body, is amazing. Messi wins them games but Xavi and Andres Iniesta destroy you. They are simply a fantastic team, a very special side
Barcelona have the best players in the world and they play as a team for one another. Pep Guardiola has built a juggernaut that I feel has just begun to win trophies. I have to congratulate a fantastic team on winning the Champion’s league for the 2nd time in 3 years.
Fletch
